Along with in-depth forecasts, this report also provides commentary on the next-generation cycle, digital insights, and broader business trends across the physical and digital games markets.

IDG Thought Piece – Music Category Analysis

    Price: $4,000.00

While many members of the analyst and media communities have weighed in on the state of the music category in recent times, IDG wanted to go beyond the general month-over-month and year-on-year growth trends with an in-depth category analysis on the Music Genre to really see what is happening in this space. Although the music category is indeed facing challenges, there were many findings from our analysis that ran counter to much of the conventional wisdom out there. In this 20-page report, IDG performed the following analyses:
    • Historical analysis of the music/dance category since the launch of the PS2
    • More granular segmentation of the category based on content and game play attributes
    • Competitive audit of the publisher landscape
    • Pricing analysis as it impacts sell-thru trends
    • Quality review score correlation analysis
    • Genre-based tie ratio analysis
    • Examining the contrast between bundled software and standalone software sales patterns
    • Future path for the music genre
    • Strategic recommendation set for any publishers operating or looking to operate in this vertical
    • Synopsis of key findings featured in our Executive Summary
As one of the primary growth drivers for the industry in 2007 and 2008, and one of the larger decliners in 2009, the fate of the category continues to be a hot-button topic in 2010. With key titles such as Rock Band 3, Guitar Hero 6, DJ Hero 2, and Band Hero 2 launching later this year, this report comes at a prescient time for the industry.

IDG Thought Piece – Kids/Tweens Market (North America)
    $6,000.00
In the first syndicated report of 2013, IDG provides a look back at the 2012 video games market across the globe. Along with in-depth forecasts, this report also provides commentary on the next-generation cycle, digital insights, and broader business trends across the physical and digital games markets.

IDG Thought Piece – Kids/Tweens Market (North America)

    Price: $6,000.00

This detailed, 70 page report covers the Kids/Tweens (KT) market extensively. A few data points and findings to consider:
    • The US Kids/Tweens market has grown revenues from $319M in 2001 to $2.8B in 2008.
    • KT market share as a % of the total SW market has trended upward, from 16% in ’01 to 34% in ’08, and up even higher to 36% through H1’09.
    • The KT market has grown by an average annual rate of 53% from ’01-’08, versus 30% for the total market during the same time span.
    • Breakeven unit targets for KT games, where development costs and time frames are less than for more hardcore content, are far lower than non-KT content, leading to an improved economics model and risk profile if executed correctly. The attractiveness of the KT market for lower-tier publishers is tied primarily to the profit potential of this model due to the lower breakevens.
    • In terms of quality, while a higher percentage of KT SKUs are in lower review score brackets, they tend to sell better than non-kids games in comparable review score brackets, both in lower-quality and higher-quality brackets.
    • The stark majority of top-selling KT releases belong to broader franchises.
    • KT games on console are priced noticeably lower than non-KT console games, but KT handheld games are priced virtually in line with non-KT content.
    • Looking out at 2010 and beyond, Project Natal, Sony’s new motion controller, and other innovations could provide additional running room for exciting KT-centric content. These new developments could help to balance the KT market across a broader base of platforms.
    • On the cautionary side, the KT space has become increasingly crowded in recent years, both in terms of publishers as well as SKUs. In 2001, there were 33 publishers involved in the KT space, while in 2008, there were 56 publishers participating. In 2001, 93 KT SKUs were released, versus 497 KT SKUs in 2008, representing a 400%+ increase.
      • This underpins the appeal of the KT category.
      • However, it also underscores the crowdedness of the field, thus increasing the barriers to entry in cutting through the glut of weak inventory at retail.
      • In ’08, only eight publishers had greater than 5% volume share, and besides Nintendo at 25%, the remaining 7 publishers posted shares in a single-digit range of 5%-9%.
    • Nintendo has been the single greatest platform and publishing driver for this segment to date, although several third-party publishers have leveraged significant KT growth to establish broader market share gains in recent years. Overall however, Nintendo’s dominance has limited the upside of some other players in the space.
